Program in which 6th to 8th grade students write a 300 - 400 word essay based on a topic chosen by VFW commander-in-chief.
Local winners receive a $50, $75, and $100 savings bond, and the chance to compete at district. District winners receive a $50, $75, and $100 savings bond and the chance to compete at state.
First, second, and third place winners at state receive a $1,000, $500, and $250 saving bond respectively, with first place being automatically entered into nationals. Student who wins nationals receive a $10,000 savings bond. Other national entrants compete for savings bonds ranging from $1,000 to $10,000.
